All Souls’ Night
‘During the month of November the old people had a wonderful devotion to the Holy Souls. It was a great custom among them to light two or more candles on All Souls’ Night. I suppose it was their idea to show light to the poor souls whom they thought used to wander around at night.
Another custom was to make down a bright fire at night and to sweep the hearth and settle the chairs around the fire so that the Poor Souls would sit down comfortably.’
